Biggest Challenge Getting Started?
We struggled with getting the permission (blessing) and cooperation from the major soccer brands in the industry at that time to allow us to become authorized resellers of their products.
How do you compete with Big Box competitors?
We focus on exceptional service and selection. Being a specialty store, we have products other places do not have. Further, our product knowledge and ties to the local soccer communities far exceed that of a big box retailer. We are passionate about soccer – We live it every day!
What impact has the internet had on your business?
Our retail sales have seen a negative impact from online stores/sales, but our team business has grown – People like the personal service and sense of assurance we provide when placing a large order of that nature. The web has had a positive impact as well, allowing us to reach more people in our area who may have not known about us in the past.
What has been your most effective marketing tool?
Getting involved with and giving back to the local soccer community has been a great marketing tool. It shows we care and are committed to “the cause,” and helps promote word of mouth recommendations. We have also done some mailings directly to local coaches, clubs and schools.
What would your advice be to others thinking of starting a business?
You should start a business based on something you are familiar with and enjoy, and be ready to work harder than anyone else and harder than you’ve ever had to work before.
